Hi Stephanie,
I don't mean to argue with your pedi or cause you to worry, but
everyting I've been told by nurses, lactation consultants and my pedi (a
younger guy) is that babies should be able to sleep throught the night by the
end of 6 months ( and remember to adjust, so for you, by the end of eight!).
Yes, some lucky parents have their babies sleep through much earlier than
that, and I agree waking every 1.5 hours is a lot, but to be told to go
"cold turkey" at this young age surprises me. When mine were around 6 months
(31.5 week twins) I began cutting back on nursing them at night (if they woke
before x time, I would let them cry and then just let them know I was
there, and over a few weeks I made that time further and further into the
night until I was only getting up once to nurse). Maybe it is different
because he is eating so much, but sleep has much more to do with neurological
readiness/development than with food consumption.
If it does work for you, great, as I know how horrendous sleep
deprivation can be, but I would not be overly surprised if it still takes a
long time to get him to sleep. Good luck!!
