Subject: Preemies W/ brain bleeds I, II, III,IV
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii
Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit

I am interested in stories from parents of preemies that experienced
cerebral hemmorages (brain bleeds) My son, Adam (born 24 weeks, 1 lb 13
oz.) had a bleed, grade IV, his 3rd day of life.

I have been told by out neonatolist that his brain may compensate for
the areas(gray matter) that have been damaged by the blood, the dead
spots known as (& please pardon my butchering of the spelling)
"leokomalaysia". We have been informed that the preemie brain, due to
its prematurity can often alternate or transfer functions of the brain
to other areas. In other words, the brain will compensate for the areas
that no longer work.

Has anyone, 1) experienced this w/ their child & 2) found this to be the
case? I have asked our doctor to be completely straightforward w/ us &
not to sugarcoat anything? Is he just giving us "Pie in the Sky" or can
this really happen?

If you have not experienced this, but have names of resources I can
devour, please let me know.

Thank God for this group. I swear I thought I was the only one around
the states w/ a preemie...& a computer. (I'm glad to know that not all
preemies are born to teenagers or crack moms.)
