Hi Sue!
My 31 1/2 weeker Emily, had both Apnea and Bradycardia when she was born. I
honestly thought that they would never stop. Then, all of a sudden they
stopped! She gained weight and came home at 4lbs, 5 oz and 1 week before her
due date.
Because she is one of a set of fraternal twins, her sister Katrina had
already been home for 2 weeks. On the second night Emily was home at 4:00 in
the morning, I gave her her bottle of breast milk, started to rock her back
to sleep and that's when the alarm went wild! I looked at Emily who was blue
and I panicked! I hit her on her back and after what seemed like an eternity,
she began to breathe again. I was in total shock! She had not had an
Apnea/Bradycardia spell in 3 weeks.
My husband works nights, so as soon as daylight hit, I called my ped and he
said to bring her in! On the way to the Ped's, she suffered two more attacks
and both times she turned blue. Needless to say, she was readmitted to the
NICU for another week for observation. While there, they upped her dosage of
aminophyllin, and she never had an A or B again. She did stay on the
aminophyllin for 8 months though.
Good luck to your DIL and tell her to try rolling a blanket up and sliding it
underneath him, so that he is laying on his side. This helped me alot.
