Preemie Pain

Hello again, everyone!

I have been reading with great interest the current discussion on preemie
pain. Helen Harrison's comments on Pavulon (sp) made me cry.

Tonight, as I was desperately trying (unsuccessfully, as is obvious!) to
fall asleep, I thought back to when Sammie was in NICU. I was rarely there
when the nurses "did anything" to her, but one time I did get to be there
when they changed and IV site. I asked to watch (as Todd turned green).
Amazing, the nurse held a penlight under Sammie's palm and stuck the IV in
that way! And you know, Sammie NEVER EVEN CRINGED! And she WAS wide awake
and looking around. Is this why drs used to believe that preemies didn't
feel pain?

It also makes me think, because I have some pro-life literature which states
that the fetus can feel pain in the 2nd trimester. Hmmmm....

Well that's all for now. Think I'll try bed again, that is, if the dog
hasn't taken my spot! :)

Hope all's well with everyone's babies!
Yours truly,
Michelle Way
