"I am interested in the experience of others with development of
preemies, she is far behind others her age in her speech development.
Is this a common experience of others? What can a parent do to help
these kids catch up. Any advice would be helpful.
I look forward to hearing from you all!

Elyse,
Sara was quite far behind in speech development as well. She was a
25 weeker. I always assumed that since she was our first and around
adults all the time that she would talk early. But at two years, she
sounded almost hearing impaired. However, she understood everything
we said, followed instructions, and invented her own way of letting
us know in no uncertain terms what she wanted.
At her 2 year check up, my ped suggested she be evaluated one more
time by the pediatric specialist that had tracked her through our hospitals
NICU follow up program. She saw no reason for concern. Though did
mention that if they are talking by age 2, they may become quite angry
because by that age they need to be able to communicate. Amazingly,
by Sara's corrected 2nd b-day, 28 months cronological, she had started
to talk. And now, almost 3, is reciting nursery rhymes, singing and
talking like a professional orator.
Good luck, she'll talk before you know it.
