Just my two cents worth: Before Sarina was discharged from the NICU, we asked
the neonatologists for advice and referrals for picking a pediatrician. They
referred us to the pediatrician that they send their OWN children too. To me,
there was no higher recommendation than that. He was also experienced in
dealing with preemies, but did not *specialize* in them.
He's been our pediatrician for almost 5 years now, and has been wonderful.
His very laid-back style is truly what we needed as worry-wart preemie
parents.( Keep in mind, though that Sarina really had no health problems at
all when coming home home, except for being on a monitor.) Still, the thought
was there at first that we needed a *preemie specialist* But, I'm glad we
made the choice that we did. It was so refreshing to see her being treated as
*just another baby* with the usual diaper rash, ear infections and colic that
all babies get, instead of being treated as a fragile little medical miracle.

My advice: if your little one does not have medical needs requiring the care
of specialist, go with a regular pediatrician, and find one with an excellent
reputation and has experience with preemies.
