Hi All!
A while back I posted for help for my friend Susan Moffat who has 26
weekers(born triplets, lost one). Susan called me hysterical this morning
because at her *twins* check up yesterday, her Ped informed her that both of
her babies had premature closing of the fontanelles and that both babies need
emergency surgery to put a plate in their heads. Her babies are now 10 months
old and I recall that my 31 weekers fontaneelles closed at 7 months or so.
Her Ped told her the fontanelles should not close until two years. That
sounds too long to me.
Her babies show NO signs of head pressure, her daughter sticks her tounge
out, but is also teething. Her Ped's nurse went so far as to call her in the
evening to ask " If her eyes are bulging out yet or have they fallen out?" I
can't imagine a professional putting such a scare into someone. She put in a
call to the NeuroSurgeon and he said he was not concerned unless facial
distotion had begun or unless the bulging became totally apparent. She has an
appointment to see him on tuesday.
Has anyone been through this? Does anyone have statistics or medical info
that can help calm her down? She is beyond freaked out and I would like to
give her something a little more reassuring to ease her worries. Doug?,
Helen? are you out there?
I recall a piece on either Dateline or Turning Point a few months back about
Colorado doctors who were constantly calling for emergency fontanelle surgery
and are now being sued up the ying yang. Does anyone recall that story?
I would like to call her sometime this evening with some better news. If you
can help in any way, PLEASE E-MAIL A.S.A.P., I will check my mail several
times today!
TIA,
Susan (Mommy to 31 1/2 weekers, Katrina and Emily, now 2 Years old and
perfect ! )
