I have never sterilized a bottle and have never had a problem. We do have a dishwasher and I just throw them in there and hand wash the nipples. When we drove to California (5,000 miles round trip) we washed bottles every night in the hotel sink. Sometimes water was only lukewarm, but we never had problems.
My feelings are that you can only protect your child so much from germs. He has always managed to put all sorts of things in his mouth. There is no telling where some of that stuff has been. But do what you think is best for your child.
