Hi Lori,
In the beginning we boiled water in the teapot and pored it into the bottles. That lasted a few months, then we purchased extra bottles and started to use the dishwasher.
Allie has had 4 colds in 2yrs. not counting RSV in NICU, and no other ailments.
(I'm probably going to be sorry I said that.)
For what it's worth, our experience was good w/out sterilizing. Good Luck w/ your decision.
