Hi there,
Just something that I thought of that I read somewhere and has really helped me. THere is so much literature on prematurity, but in Terry Brazleton's book "Touchpoints" there is a great chapter on premature babies and their development. Research has shown that when an baby is acutely ill or in intensive support systems (like a respirator) then his/her brain goes on hold and does not mature. All their energy is channelled into their physical recovery. Once they are well then their brain begins to catch up to the rest of their age group. As parents of preemies we can basically not to do enough to help foster this development through speech therapy, lots of physical exercise, playing lots of music etc etc...(as if any of us didn't know this already)....
