FYI:
I know that the hospital that I delivered at has a charity fund that
they use for people with exceptional bills.
When BC/BS said they were denying me for a pre-existing condition,
I had a financial worker show up at my bedside with paperwork to
fill out for this fund. If you meet the hospital financial criterium
then whatever the insurance does not pay, will come out of this fund.
The way my hospital did it was they looked at the girls as
"dependants" even though they were not born yet, and because I was
already on disability, that gave us only one income. So, 5 people
on 1 income met there standards.
We got a nice note saying we owed nothing. I had no nasy supervisors
to dell with or anything. It was actually the least stressful thing
I worried about during that time.
So, the morale is check with your hospital about a charity fund.
