  Fred,

  Congratulations on the birth of your son!!!  Although you can't help but
  be scared and concerned, things will get easier.

  You sound alot like I was when Lauren was born.  We had tried so hard NOT
  to have these kids yet that when people around the hospital started
  congratulating me, I wasn't sure I wanted to be congratulated.  The first
  time I went to the NICU I stared at her and cried.  Eventually, however,
  I became more comfortable with her appearance, including all the tubes,
  wires, etc.  By time Rachel and Emily were born (3 1/2 days later) I was
  a proud papa, although I was still scared.

  Hang in there.  Keep us posted on James, someone here has probably been
  through similiar experiences and can offer advice.
