Doug, (and group),
Thanks for the confirmation that the babies really did recognize my
voice. It is nice to know I could have an impact so early. It seems
that some of the things the nurses said to do were more for the parents
than the babies. For example..they told us to bring little stuffed animals
and music boxes in for the isolette. I did this but I thought it was more
for me. It made them seem more like "real babies" to me. I figured that
was the nurses' way of helping me bond. Also we had not named the
babies yet when they were born (go figure) and the Neonatologist told
us that they liked to start calling them by name within 1 hour of their
birth. So we raced back to my post-partum room and tried to think of
names. Thinking back this was a huge part of my healing. But also
Michelle had a little pink bunny with her from almost the day she was
born in the NICU and today at almost 1 year old she loves that bunny
more than other toy. So while it does help the parents, I would
highly recommend it to any present NICU resident as it also makes a
positive impact on the baby.
Thanks,
