kim-

i forgot to mention the 24-hour visiting privileges in my earlier post. i
loved being able to go and see wes any time i wanted to. we only live about 8
blocks from the hospital, so i was going back and forth on the bus a couple of
times a day and then heading back over there with my husband after he was
finished working for the day.

another great thing about our NICU was 24-hour telephone privileges. no, wes
wasn't talking on the phone yet, but his nurses were always happy to talk to me
and reassure me that he was doing well. they came to expect my calls at 2 or 3
in the morning. i can honestly say that every time i called, whoever was on
duty at the time would be pleasant, friendly and glad to tell me about wes'
latest development (and sometimes they had to explain what the developments
meant!). it was great, because i worried so much about wes that i could never
get back to sleep until i had spoken to someone who was looking at him at that
moment and could tell me that he was okay.

i love hearing about everyone's NICU experiences. it brings back a lot of the
pain, but it's nice to know you're not alone.
