I have to add that I had the same type of experience at our hospital... with
nurses and doctors (OBs) not knowing how to deal with parents of sick and
dying children.
Within a few hours of Zach's birth, we knew that he did not have a great
chance of living (15%). Of course I was upset and crying. My nurse was angry
with me because I could not manage to eat my dinner. I heard her tell
another nurse "She is in there crying again". Grrr... She came in every hour
trying to sedate me. I kept telling her that if my son died during the
night, I wanted to be aware of what was going on. She was so mad at me!
The next morning the first thing the OB did was start trying to convince me
that nothing that was happeing to my baby had anything to do with the care
that I did or did not receive from him and his team. No "I am sorry you're
baby is sick" or anything. Just "There is no way we could have seen this
coming, this is a one in a million type thing".
(He was in septic shock from Group B Strep that he got from me, which could
have been picked up on a lab culture, but my culture was negative).
Anyways, my point (yes, I do have a point) is that the nurses who are caring
for moms of sick and preemie children need to have some type of training of
what not say or do in those first few hours (or days and weeks).
