Eileen,
Welcome!
I haven't been here too long myself, but I have three "almost
kindergarteners" that were born at 33 weeks. While most 33 weekers do much
better, quite well in fact, mine have had a rougher course for reasons
unknown. I hesitate to say it's just because they were premature. Anyway
they were born on 12/31/91 and aren't too much younger than yours. We are
planning on homeschooling them since they miss the age cutoff date to start
this next school year (96/97).

Mack is more than ready...he's already doing typical kindergarten stuff and
even some 1st grade tasks. He has pretty much outgrown any 'preemie'
problems. The delays from the first and second years were rapidly overcome
in his third year. At the age of 3 years and 3 days he was tested
again...the typical dev. tests that had been ongoing since 3 months. He
maxed out the test, which goes up to 60 months (5 years), a few subtests
only scored to 54 months...but that was still 18 months beyond age level.
My two girls, Rebecca and Jessica have some speech and motor delays (at
least a year behind age level still). Yet, they have age level (or better)
cognitive skills. They need more one on one than most kids this age usually
need but I feel if I work with them at home, they will at least learn what
they should be learning even if it takes more time to express their
knowledge to others. :) We are now working on the assumption that more is
going on with them than typical preemie related delays.
Do you have any other kids? Or is this your first(s) starting school? If
you want to talk about it or if you think your kids may have special
concerns in school, please let me know. I have been (one way or another)
active in school concerns (especially special needs & early childhood) for
over ten years now. The offer stands for anyone on the list! :) :) Some
preemies need the extra help...others don't. Some teachers have a tendency
to let kids they know were preemies get special attention...some of that is
good, some is not too good. Parents need to know how to advocate for their
child(ren) to get the proper education. (I won't get on my soapbox just now
about all that) :)
