NICU protocols

On policies at NICUs . . . .
Our NICU (Pitt Mem. Hosp., Greenville, NC) requires gowning for all visitors.
However, during some "downtime" at the bedside I picked up one of the profes-
sional neonatal nursing journals. In it was an article providing quite a bit
of evidence that gowning doesn't seem to prevent/reduce infections; that hand-
washing alone is the key.
Any of you neonatal pros out there have an opinion?
