Hi, my name is Catherine Hewitt. My husband Bill and I have 2 boys, Alex
and Spencer. Alex is a 25weeker, born June25/92. Spencer is full term,
born March 5/94. WE also had Isabel, a 23 weeker, in Oct1991, who didn't
make it. I have read all the messages so far and find that they bring back
things I had forgotten about the NICU. They don't seem important now
although they were life or death at the time. I have to mention that I
live in a small town in Canada so hospital things are a bit different here
, Alex & Isabel were preemie because I had a septate uterus (causing
premature rupture of membranes & septicaemia) which was fixed by surgery.
Spencer was fine and I am seriously thinking of having another babe. My big
concern now is school. Alex is in half day special needs daycare, he
doesn't have a diagnosis or label (we are working on it, anyone have a
comment on developmental testing?), but he definitely needs school for the
social aspects. He has speech and OT delays. I go to school at night to
be a teachers aide. I figure that by the time he reaches grade 1, he's
going to need help at home with school so be prepared. Does anyone have
any comments about schooling? I actually wrote last year to a magazine
here in Canada called Today's Parent asking for advice in their penpal
section and the 10 people who wrote me wanted advice from me. This group is
great! There is absolutely no support here, once you have left the NICU,
you are on your own.
