         Dear Tom,

         I can remember very clearly posting a little
         "back-to-birthweight!" celebratory sign on my son's isolette
         when he was 4 or 5 weeks old (born at 2 lbs 12 oz at 27
         weeks).  Like your son he had breathing difficulties and was
         on the respirator for the first 6 weeks or so--and then
         intermittently for the next several months. Weight gain was
         very slow.

         So .. . only the doctors can say how serious this is, but I
         certainly share your feelings and concern.  I checked my
         kid's weight obsessively every day.
