I am from Macon, Georgia. Our daughter was in the NICU at the Medical
Center of Central Georgia for 2 weeks. (She was actually a very big
preemie at 4 pounds, 4 ozs.) We were allowed to visit whenever
we wanted to, except during grand rounds (11:00 am). I am sad to report
that MANY babies in the NICU received NO visitors, as far as I could
tell. There were several tiny ones born drug addicted and very sick. I
volunteered to hold a couple of them, simply because my heart ached so
for them lying in that scary place all alone. My husband and I visited
Katie every 3 or 4 hours to hold her and try nursing (nursing was, for
me, well nigh impossible after she had been given preemie bottles for 2
weeks, but that's another story...) All in all the experience was an
amazing one for me. Neonatal units are truly places where miracles occur.
