WHY DID IT HAPPEN?

A Royal Commission of Inquiry has been set up following the intense bushfires of 7th February 2009 in which at least 173 persons perished, and many townships destroyed.

ROYAL COMMISSIONS

Of the plethora of "investigations" into bushfires in Australia since European settlement only three have been Royal Commissions. They were Leonard E B Stretton into the 1939 Black Friday fires in Victoria, Leonard E B Stretton into the fire that ignited the Yallourn open cut coal mine in 1944, and G. J. Rogers into the 1961 Dwellingup fire in Western Australia.

INTERIM REPORT

The Commission made its interim report on 17 August 2009. This is available from the Royal Commission website on the "full details" link.

OUR POSITION

Progress to date has been encouraging.   There is much more work ahead for the Commission.

A key area requiring attention is fuel management on both public and private land,

We look forward to the final report in 2010.
