To be economic it is normally combined with the marketing of souvenir badges, medals, mugs etc. See Event Souvenirs We recently covered the Australian Masters Games in Newcastle. We charge $5 per engraving and for Melbourne locations will donate 10% of total sales back to your organization. Unfortunately the higher costs (travel, accommodation) prevents this for interstate venues.
