Trafalgar Fun Day Weds Jan 26. 20 Dec

A Fun Day/ Practice day will be held at Trafalgar on Australia Day, Wednesday January 26, 2005.

This will give riders an opportunity to test out the new sections of the track and practice for the Norco Battle of Trafalgar. Riders not planning on racing at the Norco Battle are still welcome to ride at the Fun Day.

I'm away for Chrissy break. 24 Dec

There will no updates on 4XFEVA for a couple of weeks as I am away on hols.

I'll be back in the second week of January ready with fresh info on the Norco Battle of Trafalgar and other 4X stuff from around the country.

Take it easy. Take time to think what Christmas is all about.

Cheers. Brendan.

05 Calendar 4 Chrissy? 23 Nov

Check out the cool Aussie MTB calendar for 2005.

Pro photographer Gavin D has sent me one and says, " It features images from four or five Australian photographers and has been designed by Nathan Lorkin at Relish Communications."

It has Dirt Jump, 4X, Downhill, XC and Trials pics. It also has dates for events throughout 2005 and club and other contacts.

If you are interested in more details about the MTB calendar please email Michael (the guy who is looking after orders) and he will be able to help you out.

Gavin D also has a BMX calendar available with some more cool pics.

If you want a BMX calendar, email Gavin. Both calendars are a tad over $20 each. Get in to 'em.

Also, Gavin is available to take pro pics of you. He does some good stuff. I've bought a few pics from him and used them to send to sponsors as a "thankyou". Just let him know when an event is on and ask him to be there.

He is a damn good photographer and is keen to keep supporting our sport. If you want pro photographers like him to keep hanging around, support him. You can check out his site.

New-look Trafalgar ready for '05. 19 Nov

Brendan working on the step-up double on the all-new bottom section of Trafalgar. It is ready to race for 2005.

With six months in the making and around 150 cubic metres of dirt used, the new look bottom third of the track at Trafalgar is now complete and ready for 2005.

Last week I made my way down to Trafalgar to attempt to finish off the new bottom section of the track.

I hired a local earthmover who did an absolute champion job, and I was on another tractor. After two days solid of earthmoving and shaping, I finally managed to complete the section.

The track is now longer and has an extra two corners, and three jumps.

The new section will demand more rider ability and greater fitness. It will also make for closer racing.

Check out the pics and read the new section below. Note that the pics were taken during a big dump of rain so they don't do justice to what the section really looks like. - Brendan.

The new-look bottom section @ Trafalgar.

After landing the Big Gap, the new section takes a sharp left. Pro riders may be able to hug the flat corner but most riders will have to take the 1.5 - 2 metre high berm to get around it.

This corner is likely to give you the most "G's" you'll find for a long while. Railing it at top speed feels fully awesome and scary at the same time.

Out of the berm you need to pedal yourself sick on the short straight to carry your speed through to the finish.

You hit the single jump and launch across the road.

You then land on the downramp into the gully section. Straight after the downramp you hit a small drop off and veer to the left, pedalling flat out.

If you want to make a pass on someone you can rail the berm that goes along the whole of the outside of the track through the gully.

Following this is the huge right hand "Vertberm". Because it is so huge, you can pedal all the way around it and you could have up to three riders on it at the one time. Talk about a set up for a close finish.

Coming out of the "Vertberm" you have a step up double followed by a single.

Novices can roll up the step up and launch the doubles and roll the single.

Sport/ Expert riders can launch from the step up and clear the doubles and roll the double.

The challenge is if anyone can go bigger than this.

The idea is for the pros to launch from the stepup, scoop into the middle of the doubles and launch out of them and land on the downside of the single. HUGE! Can anyone do it?

From here there is a 20 metre pedalling straight before you hit the 2 metre plus finish step down.

Can't wait to see people race it!

4X Fun Day rained out. 15 Nov

The 4X Fun Day that was meant to happen @ Trafalgar yesterday had to be cancelled due to way too much rain leading up to it and on the day. Like 5 inches in two weeks. It was all slop and mud!

The Pushi crew (who manage 4X Fun Days) and I woke up Sunday morning to the sound of dumping rain and it didn't stop for the next few hours.

We still had about a dozen cars turn up wanting to ride. You guys are fully commited! Apologies to all those who came and had to be turned away. Can't help the weather.

No dates have been confirmed yet for further events at Trafalgar. I'm in the process of trying to secure some support to pay for 2005 events. Hopefully I'll have a calendar available by early to mid December.

I went down to Trafalgar a few days earlier to finish off the bottom section of the track. I finally got it finished! Stay tuned for the story and pics. - Brendan.

Update: new site address. 8 Nov
I just got an email from the guys who provided my with the site addresses telling me the old address, 4XFEVA.com has been reinstated. So you can now find 4XFEVA in two places on the web - 4XFEVA.com and 4XFEVA.net.
New site address: 4XFEVA.net 5 Nov

For those of you who have been wondering where this site has gotton to, it goes like this: The site address 4XFEVA.com was up for renewal and I was a day or so late to renew it.

Anyway, someone who has nothing at all to do with MTB or 4X decided that because a lot of you typed in 4XFEVA.com on your computers in the past year, that he/she needed to have that name him/herself.

As a result, he/she claimed it and I had to go searching around to try and find another available site address. Luckily this one wasn't too different to the other one. So from now on, 4XFEVA can be found on the web @ www.4XFEVA.net. Please spread the word around.

Cheers. Brendan.

'05 4X Bike: Vario Skizo. 27 Oct

The Vario Skizzo retails for $3200.

Ryan from Singletrack Imports was at the last 4X Fun Day at Trafalgar on this Vario Skizo.

He's a young guy getting in and having a go with the whole importing thing. Its great to see youngens stepping out.

Well done Ryan.

Anyway. Back to the Vario Skizo bike. It retails for $3200 and is spec'd with Marzocchi DJ III's, LX drivetrain, beefy FSA BMX Smack Daddy cranks, and Hayes HFX 9 brakes. I didn't get a chance to ride it or even to have a good look at it @ the Fun Day so I can't give it the thumbs up or down.

According to Ryan, the bike will feature in the November edition of AMB. You can check out all the details of the bike @ his site.

GT MTX #3 cancelled. 27 Oct
Word from Robbie at the Newcastle MTX track is that due to bad weather, the GT MTX # 3 scheduled for October 3 was cancelled.
I'm back with fresh plans for Trafalgar! 18 Oct

My new son Isaac (Zac).

Whilst @ home spending time with my new-born son Isaac (Zac) and his mum, I've been doing some brain storming for 2005 plans for Trafalgar.

I won't give too much away yet but if the plans for events and track design come together, 2005 is set to be another solid year of fun and frivolity at Trafalgar.

Stay tuned for details over the following weeks. - Brendan.

Updates and upgrades on hold. 24 Sept

There will be no updates on 4XFEVA for a few weeks as Brendan is about to become a dad and is having some time off.

There will be no updates on this site for the next three weeks as I will be away from the computer and at home with my soon to arrive baby.

With the arrival of the little fella/ chick (don't know what sex it is yet), it will mean that the completion of upgrades to the Trafalgar track will also be put on hold for a few months.

This is scary stuff becoming a dad.

I'd much rather take on Rennie, Robinson, and Hill on the world's maddest 4X track than be in the delivery room with my lady as she pushes and heaves out a little one.

But don't fret. I'll be back ready for more MTB stuff - keen as ever to get Traf pumping again. Although I'll be sleep deprived, I'll keep hammering out the 4X stories from around the country on 4XFEVA.

- Brendan.

Biggest Fun Day Ever! 30.8

GT's Simon Anderson at the recent Fun Day at Trafalgar, ripping up the new berm that leads from the Big Gap into the new section.

A huge turnout of over 100 riders and spectators at Delhuntie Park , Trafalgar on the weekend made it the biggest 4X fun day ever held there.

The 40 plus riders were greeted with blue skies and sunshine, and one rider scored a super cool Weet-Bix shirt as a random entry giveaway, thanks to Sanitarium Weet-Bix.

Riders came not only to get in a day of 4X practice but to check out the recent upgrades to the Trafalgar track. As the upgrades are still a work in progress, riders rode the current track for most of the day however some gave the new section a go toward the end of the day.

It was great to see a heap of young guns at the Fun Day. Young teenagers made up over half of the riders present at the Fun Day. Also, two girls made an appearance on their tredlies. One of them was Amanda Patterson, who crashed heavily on the track last year but was back to beat her fears. Also making a return after a big crash was French dude Ben Hergott. After breaking some vertebrae earlier this year, he was back and going big as ever.

But the day wasn't all sunshine. The clouds came over during the middle of the day and light rain fell for about an hour making the track greasy and tricky to ride. Then with half an hour to the finish of the day, it absolutely dumped down with rain, ending any chance to get another run in.

The big numbers at the Fun Day confirmed that 4X is still going strong in Victoria and hints of bigger and better days to come.

A big thanks again to Petri from Pushi Bike Shop for his effort in running the day. As well as doing rego and keeping things going, he also found time to do some runs on his new Sinister DH rig. He recently became the importer of this brand of MTB's so keep your eye out for them.

Check out the pics from the day by clicking on the pic or going to the gallery page.

Upgrades - still work in progress.30.8

Local Tom Mulligan testing out the new gully section at the recent Fun Day.

Brendan made the 4 ½ hour epic journey across Victoria to Trafalgar a few days before the Fun Day to do more upgrades on the track.

His aim was to try and complete work on the new bottom section, but upon arriving, found that with 8 inches of rain having fallen on the track in the past weeks, work would be very limited.

Despite this setback, he was able to put in a low berm after the Big Gap and changed the section that was going to be a 2 metre drop into a long down ramp followed by a small 1 metre drop. Apart from this though, not much else could be done.

The riders at the Fun Day checked out the new section and despite it being boggy, said it looked good - like a luge or a big waterslide. They loved the Vert Berm and were super keen to get back to the track and hit it flat out when the section finally dries out.

The whole new bottom section still needs another 2 days of work to complete and will need tweaking after riders test it out. But when it is finished, it will certainly be more technical than ever and more fun to ride.

Brendan is currently sussing out dates of when he can get back down to Trafalgar and get it all finished. Keep posted for details.

More upgrades for Trafalgar. 16.8

More upgrades will be happening at Trafalgar this week - plans are to finish the bottom section of the track.

Course designer, Brendan Scale will be heading to Trafalgar for a few days this week to continue upgrades to the track at Delhuntie Park.

He will attempt to finish off the bottom section of the track in time for the Fun Day this Sunday.

This will include putting in a berm after the Big Gap, widening the next straight, putting in a set of doubles and grooming the finish jump.

Don't forget the Fun Day at Trafalgar this Sunday. For more info email info@4XFEVA.com.

4XFEVA Celebrates 1st Birthday. 6.8

4XFEVA is celebrating its 1st birthday this week.

4XFEVA, the only 4X specific website in Australia, celebrates its first birthday this week.

In this time we have had over 7,000 hits from riders around Australia and overseas. Some weeks we received over 500 hits like when the Victorian 4X Championships was on.

We have endeavoured to provide informative and accurate 4X stories as well as provide some really cool pics of 4X riders in action.

We regularly receive emails from guys and girls who want info on 4X because they think it is so cool and want to get into it.

Props to those who have been there for us like Vicnet, who host the site free of charge, and all the other sponsors like Delhuntie Park, Sanitarium Weet-Bix, Fat Tyre Flyers, MTBA, Troy Lee Designs, Horsham Cyclery, and Diamond Screen Print. Most of all, thanks to "The Man" for giving us all this good stuff.

We hope the next 12 months is going to be even bigger and better than the first. Props to y'all for supporting us. Cheers!

Eildon race report. 23.7

Sport class riders in action in the first corner @ Eildon recently.

By Rohin Adams, courtesy ftf.com.au.

The track was in sensational condition for the Fatties July 4X club race at Eildon on the weekend. As much as it threatened, the rain never broke through leaving the track much firmer than at the National Champs there earlier this year.

Many a rider took a tumble but no serious injuries were had as riders raced through the Motos for the 47 riders. It was great to have the support of Pushi, GT and Maxxis at the event providing over a thousand dollars of prizes for the happy winners in each category.

Newcastle upgrades look good. 19.7

The work on the Newcastle MTNX/ 4X track over the past month or so looks to have paid off with some serious upgrades happening.

They have outlayed some serious bucks to get a fully pro looking steel start ramp. That stuff aint cheap, believe me.

Amongst other things, they have a nice set of two pack doubles set up on one of the straights too. Check out the pics below. Pics courtesy of GT.

The new "pro" looking start ramp @ Newcastle track.

Sunshine in winter @ Traf Open Day. 14.7

Riders launch together for the camera @ the June Open Day @ Trafalgar.

35 riders showed up to the June Open Day @ Trafalgar and were welcomed by slippery conditions.

With over five inches of rain falling on the track in the two weeks leading up to the Open Day, riders struggled to hold it together down the track, especially around the sweeper between the two gaps.

However, it wasn't long till the sun came out, the skies turned to blue, and the track started drying out. Soon the greasy mud turned to sweet, tacky, super fast, dirt. This was the only clear sky day in two weeks - who said the Big Guy doesn't look after us.

Open Day organiser Brendan Scale did a few runs and said the track was the fastest he had ever ridden it. The takeoffs on the jumps were grippy which meant you could hit them at full speed, and the sticky berms meant no braking - you could hit them flat out and rail them the whole way around – sensational.

Pro photographer, Gavin D was there clicking snaps all day, getting some final pics for his 05 calendar. Keep an eye out for it come September this year.

Props to Petri from Pushi for co-managing the day. He did a great job running the show, even hiring full face helmets and knee/shin guards to kids that didn't have any. Thanks mate.

Prototype GT I-Drive 4X'er. Only one of ten in the world. Rides like a dream.

Stephen Robinson from GT was there with a new prototype Brian Lopes short travel I Drive.

It is the only one in Australia and one of only ten in the world. It looked pretty sweet and rode really well.

Brendan did a few sprints, and rode some of the track and was impressed with its stiffness. Stephen says the bike is likely to be available as an '05 model. Keep your eyes out for it.

New "Vert Berm" @ Trafalgar. 14.7

The all-new "Vert Berm" @ Trafalgar. You can hit this at warp speed and rail it with ease.

Brendan brought a group of young guys to the Open Day who stayed on for a couple of days to start the 2004 upgrades.

First job was to divert the track from the big gap through to the finish. Bring in two tractors and half a dozen guys on shovels for two days and you have amongst other features, the all new “Vert berm”, three metres high at its apex and half a metre of full vert.

Hit the "Vert Berm" at any speed a bike can go and you'll rail this baby with ease, roosting out of it as fast or faster than you came into it.

Other features of the new section include a two metre high, rollable dropoff, a new set of doubles, and an upgraded finish jump. The upgrades still need a couple days' work before its ready to be raced on, but it promises to be nearly as fast as the old track but a lot more technical. Big props to the two young guys, Palmer and Wilko, who did most of the shovel work during the upgrades.

Trafalgar upgrades coming up. 17.6

Track layout of Trafalgar 4X - the red sections are the proposed '04 upgrades.

Trafalgar 4X will be undergoing upgrades immediately following the Open Day next Sunday.

A team of a dozen guys will be on tractors, shovels working furiously over the days following the Open Day to face lift the track.

The changes all involve adding more corner to the track. The first change will be putting a 90 degree corner in after the first jump to make the start more interesting.

The second change will be making the stutters bigger and making the following corner a lot deeper.

The third change is big. Right after the big gap the track will take a sharp left to make things really interesting. There will be a 2 metre high drop off, a short straight, a tight right hand berm and then on to the finish striaght with doubles and a step down finish jump.

Stay tuned for more updates and pics. See ya @ the Open Day!

Newcastle 4X track review. 23.4

Robbie McNaughton is the guy behind the Newcastle 4X Track. Here he is in action on his DH sled. Pic: Adam McLeod.

After some pretty big things were said about the all new Newcastle 4X track in a media release that appeared in Freewheel and AMB, I was keen to get up to Newcastle and have a first hand look at what all the fuss was about.

Robbie McNaughton from Black Phoenix Films and Clict magazine is the man behind the Newcastle 4X track. Outlaying thousands of bucks out of his own pocket to get the show off the ground, he built the track on a sloping grassy paddock on his grandparent's property.

The track is close to Newcastle, a major population area, and is easy to find, being just off a major road. First impressions of the track are that it is very different to the computer images that appeared in recent mags, and it is short and tight.

A good amount of dirt has been trucked in to construct the track, although more dirt would take the track to the next level.

Adam Smithson in action on the first corner. Pic:Black Phoenix Films.

Let's face it; you can never really have too much dirt when it comes 4X. The track also offers good viewing for spectators. The entire track can be seen from the mid section.

At about 200 metres long and 25 seconds to complete, the current layout of the track goes like this: Out of the gate and down the short start ramp, you immediately hit a step up. After this there is a tight left, right, and left.

A short pedally straight follows, and then a nice big set of doubles that even the pros can't clear. Down the downramp, you then hook into another tight left, right, and left. This lines you up for the finish straight featuring a nice set of quads.

Luke Madill getting some nose bleeds on one of the jumps. Pic: BPF.

After the GT Bikercross was held there earlier this year, Robbie realized the track was in need of some serious changes - more flow, more airtime, and needed to be longer. These changes will be happening in the next while. The track will be extended an extra 100 metres up the hill, giving riders two extra straights before they join the existing track.

The corners will also be less acute, giving more track flow. The “stall walls” on the inside of each corner will be destroyed and the dirt from these will be added to berms on the outside of the corners, making them really decent.

Ricky Boyer on one of the "Stall Walls". Pic: Black Phoenix Films

The plan will also include more jumps on the track. As well as jumps on the new section at the top, there will be a couple more before the current big doubles and a couple immediately following the corner after the doubles.

Once the upgrades have been completed, the track will certainly be fun to ride and will be of a solid national standard. Now New South Wales has put itself on the 4X map in Australia . Props to Robbie for taking the intiative and getting the track happening.

Review by Brendan Scale.

Pros tell what makes a good 4X track. 2.4

Wade Bootes agrees with other pros in that a good 4X track should look like a Downhill BMX track.

With a lot of different opinions around at the moment as to what makes a good 4X track, I decided to ask some of the guys who race 4X at the highest possible level, what they thought made a good 4X track.

Does a 4X track need multiple lines in the corners, and/ or on the straights? Does a track need to be wide open fast, or dies it need to be slow, tight, and technical?

Should there be lots of pedaling or should riders just use gravity to their advantage? And what about the start? Should there be a calculated, consistent, “ready, set, go”, or should there be a random start where the gate can drop at anytime within a given time frame? These are some of the questions I hit them with.

So who did I ask and what did they say? The main guys I spoke to were current National 4X Champ and World Cup Haro rider, Mick Hannah; World Cup Giant rider, Jarrod Rando; Multi World BMX, Dual, and 4X winner, Wade Bootes; and the original Aussie to race with the world's best on a mountain bike, National Downhill/ 4X Coach, Scott Sharples.

These guys pretty much all agreed that a good 4X track looked like…wait for it…. A Downhill BMX track. This meant a wide track with big, and tight angled berms, and fast flowing straights littered with big jumps and whoops. These guys said the best 4X tracks on the World Cup circuit are the ones that are basically downhill BMX tracks like Fort William.

One thing was clear after talking with them, they saw no place on a good 4X track for multiple lines on either corners or on the straights. Their reasoning was that there will always be a faster line out of the two lines on either a corner or straight and everyone would take that line.

They also said that the track must be wide. Like 4 to 5 metres wide. This includes corners. A good corner, they said, needs to have one big berm that 4 riders can go around together. Every corner needs to be at least right angles or tighter. This includes the first corner. There used to be the opinion that the first corner should be no more than 45 degrees. Not anymore. Also, they said there needs to be at least one or two 180 degree corners, and there could be one or two flat corners (i.e no berm) as well.

Wade Bootes said his ideal track length would be around 45 seconds long. That's probably a distance of around 500 metres. He said this gives you time to catch up if you make a mistake during a race. He also said that he thought forward falling, random start, gates were fine. They do this on the NORBA rounds, according to him. Its interesting hearing this from a pro BMX'er who has come from calculated starts. He also said the course needs to go like this: straight, corner, straight, corner … When he means straight, he's talking about 50 metres or so.

Mick Hannah and Rando agreed with this. They said the course needs to have some tighter corners but also some fast open straights to do big jumps - but not too fast. I told them about the Trafalgar track where riders are clocking 60+ km/h. They said that was too fast.

They said 4X needs to have big jumps - jumps that give you some serious airtime. They said when building them, look at what you think is do-able but still would be a big ask to do. That's the kind of jumps they are looking for. Wade Bootes added that to keep it safe and to accommodate for those still developing in the sport, the jumps need to be either tabletops, or very rounded doubles.

Regarding the pedaling issue, Hannah and Rando said, “Don't worry about the BMX'ers”. But at the same time, they didn't say no pedaling. When you have course like they suggested with a couple 180 degree corners, you certainly have to pedal out of them to maintain speed.

So, away with multiple lines in corners and straights, keep the course wide, and flowing. Yet make sure all corners are tighter than right angles and have big berms or none at all. Most importantly, don't forget the big jumps. These are the things that riders love and crowds come to watch.

2003 Stories
Matchin' it with the BMX'ers. 21.11

BMX'ers are leaving downhillers in their wake when it comes to 4X.

Although Fourcross (4X) is a mountain bike sport and is raced on downhill slopes, downhill mountain bikers have been getting a lesson or two from BMX’ers at how to do it well.

Sure Fourcross is closer to BMX than Downhill but that doesn’t make downhillers feel any better about getting the shellacking that they’ve been getting.

You don’t have to look real far to see the dominance of the BMX Brigade. On every level of Fourcross (4X) racing this year, BMX’ers have come out on top. Start with club level – Simon Anderson wins Bacchus Marsh. BMX’er. State level - Tiger Robinson wins Vic Champs. Yep, BMX’er. National level – Tiger wins again, beating three of the world’s best mountain bikers. Sure it was on a BMX track, but he would more than likely have won on a Fourcross (4X) track too. Oceania level – John Johnson wins Oceania Champs. Again, BMX’er. International level – Michael Prokop wins World Championships. You guessed it, BMX’er!

BMX'ers beat Downhillers out of the gate @ 4X.

So what is it about BMX’ers that make them so good @ Fourcross (4X)? And why is it that these guys, who usually race bikes with wheels half the size of downhillers, are beating downhillers at their own sport?

It all starts @ the start. Fourcross is pretty much won or lost out of the gate.

Pro BMX’ers have been using start gates for years. They know how to get a good start and keep it. At the local BMX track they spend one full night every week just practicing starts. If mountain bikers want to start taking it to the BMX’ers, they are going to have to start heading down to the BMX track and join the BMX’ers. Be warned though, you may not get all smiles and grins when they see you turn up on your 26” rig.

A MTB'er is about to be passed by a low flying BMX'er.

Secondly, BMX’ers have learnt the art of staying low over jumps. They know that staying on the ground will win them the race. Mountain bikers on the other hand go big, lose the race, but win the crowd.

Unless there are obstacles that can be cleared by

jumping, hugging the track and staying low is the key to speed @ Fourcross (4X).

I saw it firsthand in the Under 17 semifinal at the Vic Champs. Sam Hocken, a young gun mountain biker got the jump out of the gate and went big on the first jump. David Page, a BMX’er, was a full bike length behind him leading up to the jump. David stayed low, cut in under Sam and took the lead (Above is the pic of David about to pass Sam). Mountain bikers need to tone down the crowd factor, get down to the local BMX track and practice hitting as fast as they can with the aim of staying as low as possible.

BMX’ers have another advantage over MTB’ers. They have the fitness. Sure the rare dedicated MTB’ers put in the hours on the weights and doing the km’s, but BMX’ers train specifically for the race distance of BMX/ 4X – about 400 metres. Their focus is on a short, sharp burst of power that lasts for around 30 seconds. If MTB’ers want to improve in Fourcross (4X), they need to start heading down to the local ¼ mile drag strip and practice pedaling their guts out from start to finish. They also need to head down to the local gym and pump weights, building up leg power.

The last area where BMX’ers are ahead of MTB’ers is being comfortable racing with other riders. Although MTB’ers talk a lot about racing with elbows out, and fully launching off big jumps, the truth is they aren’t real keen to launch ten metres off a jump at 60 km/ h with three other guys around them. Sure BMX’ers don’t usually hit these kinds of speeds on a BMX track but they are used to racing with other riders around them.

Adam Miller, the ThumperX motorbike Champ who raced his mountain bike @ the Vic Champs is a great example of being comfortable with other riders around. In one of Adam’s races, a mountain biker was leading until the second last jump. Adam was right on his rear when he saw a small gap on the inside of the MTB’er. He passed the MTB’er @ 60 km/ h with cm’s to spare. I heard the MTB’er say, “Mate, if he’s got the balls to pass me there, he can have first place!”

MTB’ers need to get together and head to the local track and practice making moves on each other at full speed. This will build up confidence in passing and riding close together without crashing (hopefully)!

So MTB’ers, get on your hardtails and head down to the BMX track. Practice those starts and practice them again. Take your mates with you and practice pulling off passing maneuvers on them. Hit the jumps flat out and stay low. Remember, the first past the finish post is not always the crowd favorite. And lastly, sprint your guts out for the full 400 metres. Develop power in those legs of yours.

When you build up a routine of these things, that’s when you’ll start seeing MTB’ers reclaiming Fourcross (4X), and matchin’ it with the best of the BMX’ers.

Interview: National 4X Champ. 12.11

2003 National 4X Champion & Pro BMX'er, Michael "Tiger" Robinson. Pic: gavind.com.au

Just over a week ago Michael “Tiger” Robinson took out the National Fourcross (4X) Championship @ Mt Beauty, beating a world class field of riders.

Only three weeks before this, he took out the Victorian Fourcross (4X) Championship @ Delhuntie Park, Trafalgar.

Most mountain bikers probably haven’t heard of the name “Tiger” Robinson before, however that doesn’t mean this guy just decided to get on a bike a week before the Championships and decide to give it a go.

This guy is a BMX’er and is a huge BMX’er. He is up there in the who’s who of the Aussie BMX. However, if you met “Tiger” away from the bike, you wouldn’t pick him to be a pro BMX/ 4X dude.

If you’ve seen Tiger on a bike and then talked to him off the track, you’d swear he is two different people. Bit like the Dr Jekyll and Mr. Hyde thing. On the bike he is fully aggressive, powerful, dominant, and not afraid to show some style. Off the bike he is this quite, reserved, softly spoken guy.

Into the details: the interview with Tiger Robinson by Brendan Scale @ Delhuntie Park.

BS: First question. I hear you are quite the pro on the BMX. What kind of stuff have you done?

TR: I’ve been racing BMX for years. GT has been my sponsor for 14 of them. I am currently the Pacific Oceania Champion. I’m ranked 8th in the world. I’m also National Champion 5 times over.

BS: Mate, you sure are no stranger to the pedally two wheel thing.

TR: You could say that.

BS: There are a few of you guys crossing over from BMX to Mountain Bikes for Fourcross (4X). When did you start riding the MTB’s?

TR: I started racing Dual Slalom in 1996 and have been doing a bit of that and now Fourcross (4X) since then. I also raced Downhill too. I was National DH Junior Champion in 1998.

BS: So what do you think of Fourcross (4X)?

TR: It is growing in Australia. It is huge in America.

BS: What bike are you riding for Fourcross (4X)?

TR: The GT Ruckus.

BS: What do you think of the Delhuntie Park Fourcross (4X) track?

TR: It is awesome. Fun to ride. A great day of racing.

BS note: It is reported that after everyone had left the race @ Delhuntie Park, Tiger had his camera out taking pics of different sections of the track. He was particularly interested in the Big Gap. We think he liked that jump.

Tiger made a big effort to fly down from his home town, Brisbane for the Victorian Fourcross Championships. We really appreciated having him there. Thanks Tiger!
