The Great War :  Soldiers' Memorial Obelisk erected in Footscray Park

 Soldiers Memorial Research by Mrs. Esma Green, City of Footscray Historical Society, 29 August, 1988.
 

Location
Current: In front of Footscray R.S.L. Club building, west side of Geelong Road, about 183 metres north of Barkly Street.
Previous: Footscray Park; was moved due to widening of Ballarat Road, in mid 1960's.

Description
A tapered obelisk, approx. 5.5 metres high, made of Harcourt grey granite, mounted on double plinth bluestone base. Front of monument faces east.

Probably James Taylor & Sons, Monumental Masons, Footscray.

Unveiled
Sunday 24th April, 1921 by the State Commandant Brigadier General Brand, C.B., C.M.G., D.S.O. Address given by Mayor of Footscray, Cr. J.R. Johnson.

Body Responsible
Erected by the R.S.S.I.L.A. (Returned Sailors & Soldiers Imperial League of Australia), later to become the R.S.L. (Returned Services League) to honor the men who fought and died in the Great War (1914 18), Second World War (1939 45), Korea and Vietnam.
