From the record supplied by the Australian War Memorial Archives Albert Hopperton Carter joined the Australian Imperial Forces on 7.6.1916 as a Private in the 4th/2nd Pioneers. On 12.11.1916 he proceeded overseas to France to reinforce the unit. Albert Carter was wounded in action in France on 29.9.1917. He returned to Australia as a Lance Corporal on the ship [HS Fort Denison?], disembarking on 13.11.1919. He was discharged from the Army on 22.3.1920.
