Footscray and the municipality of Maribyrnong contain many schools which have been historically important in the development of the region.

Geelong Road School, 1898

Footscray Historical Society has lots of interesting historical information relating to schools in the area. The members are pleased to assist with your research enquiries and to assist you in researching your school or local history.
What is the history of your school?
A project for your school could be to research your school's history or even develop a web site documenting it's history.
The Lee Street Primary School in Carlton offers an excellent example of a time tunnel project which gives door ways into the past about their school.

The history of a school can be relevant to the entire community.

Food for thought....

  • Does your school  keep a register of admittances from the beginnings of the school, which can reveal interesting information about the cultural and religious background of the community.
  • What was the history of the site? Was your school a swamp land or an factory?
  • How has the uniform and curriculum changed?
  • How has punishment and play changed? Do you still play old favourite games such as hop scotch and marbles?
  • What might a packed lunch have been like 50 or 100 years ago?
  • Has the way people get to school changed?
  • Did your parents go to the same school? What was schooling like for them?
  • Past students...Does your school still exist! How have things changed?
