Mullum Mullum Creek and its valley comprises a series of islands of bushland and rural open space connected by a thin ribbon of nature, in a sea of urban development.

Its viability as a natural ecosystem is enhanced by its connection to Melbourne's most important wildlife corridor, the Yarra Valley.

Button Everlasting - Photo: © Helen Moss Its values are further enhanced by open space links along its many tributaries and greenlinks over low saddles to the neighbouring valleys of Harris Gully / Andersons Creek, Ruffey Creek, Koonung Creek, Dandenong Creek, Narr-Meian Creek (Jumping Creek) and Brushy Creek.

Its location and shape have meant that it is possible for a great many local residents and visitors to have close access to nature from within their own neighbourhoods. A very wide variety of indigenous plant communities, and rare and uncommon plants are present along the creek, including a number of native orchids and native grass areas. These provide habitat for a wide diversity of animals birds and insects. Native animals present in the valley include Kangaroos, Wombats, Koalas, Platypus, Rakali, Echidnas, Sugar Gliders, Ringtail and Brushtail possums.

The development of the Mullum Mullum Creek Linear Park will ensure that the bushland islands and their connecting ribbon, including the creek itself, are maintained and enhanced, that the connection to the Yarra is sustained, and that people's appreciation of the valley is encouraged through access and appropriate recreational opportunities.

Bulbine Lily - Photo: © Helen Moss The linear park is rich in cultural history as it contains important relics of aboriginal life and early european settlement.

Ancient scar trees, aboriginal camping places and spirit places of the Wurundjeri aborigines are located along the length of the creek.

Schwerkolt Cottage at Mitcham and Pontville homestead at Templestowe are reminders of the european pioneers, their struggles to "conquer" the land and subdue its traditional aboriginal owners.
Reminders of the first discovery of gold in Victoria at Anderson Creek (Warrandyte) are also found along the Mullum Mullum Creek.

Better understanding and appreciation of this cultural heritage, can help our society better reconcile past cultural conflicts and land uses as we approach the Centenary of Federation.

Trail systems are to be developed to follow the Mullum Mullum Creek from its headwaters near Yarra Valley Anglican School through to the main Yarra River trail systems at Tikalara at Templestowe. Linking trails will be developed to link to the Dandenong Ranges and the Dandenong Valley trails. Apart from their recreational values, these trails will also assist interpretation and understanding of the natural and cultural environment of the Mullum Mullum Creek and its valley.

This major Linear Park being progressively developed along the full 22 kilometre length of the Mullum Mullum Creek, has the support of theCity of MaroondahCity of Maroondah, theCity of WhitehorseCity of Whitehorse, and theCity of ManninghamCity of Manningham, Melbourne Water and Parks Victoria.
