The Last Judgement: images from external mural paintings and signs belonging to the oral culture

In Bucovina in the North-east of Romania, external mural paintings have been preserved on some fifteenth and sixteenth-century churches and monasteries One of these has a vast visual poem with the theme of Parousia - The Resurrection of the Dead painted on the western wall at the entrance of the church which attracts many visitors.

What did the people of the fifteenth and sixteenth century believe about the themes represented in these paintings? In this paper we present a comparison between the painted images from the monasteries of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, the little information preserved from former centuries and the rich material on offer from investigations in the field of oral culture carried out in the nineteenth century.
