One of the fundamental assets of folk narrative research is that folktales, while being rooted in regional tradition, are distributed on an international scale. Besides giving them worldwide appeal, this dual character qualifies them as ideal messengers of intercultural concerns. Accordingly, folktales might exercise a crucial role within the ‘Dialogue of Civilisations’ recently proposed by the Iranian head of state, Khatami. This dialogue has been proposed in order to focus worldwide attention on unity within difference rather than on the concept of conflicting backgrounds and intentions formulated by Samuel P. Huntington. My paper intends to demonstrate the multiple ways in which folk narrative research might contribute to this dialogue by serving as an intermediary between cultures as wide apart as those of the Australian aborigines and Iran.
