Traditional Culture in Some Eastern Europe Countries in the Context of Globalisation

The ongoing process of globalisation has a marked impact on folk culture, particularly profound in the countries which are experiencing serious economic and social difficulties. The numerous similarities between the post-communist East-European countries seem to justify the regional approach to the theme, since globalisation raises multiple questions and concerns related to folk culture on a national, but also on a regional level.

Implantation of foreign cultural models, collective identity crises, language problems provoked by the dramatic social changes, deterioration of mass education etc. are among the major factors contributing to the erosion of folk culture. New folk phenomena are emerging, most of which tune into the national tradition as a response by the folk to their present experience, but others deviate from the traditional aesthetic and ethical norms.

In order to present a more detailed picture of the current situation and possible future tendencies, some sociological methods are applied in the paper (questionnaires, analysis of age group differences, urban vs. rural population etc.).

Institutional support for activities related to folk culture could facilitate its survival if not for the budget shortages and lack of concern in some countries. Western institutions and organizations are also making efforts to contribute to the preservation of traditional culture in the region. The paper makes an attempt to evaluate the results of such activities.

Some parts of the population manifest a renewal of interest in folklore as a reaction against current crises. As a result, folk culture is acquiring a new role in providing support for the vacillating national spirit in the context of globalisation.
