Constructing an Image for Tourism: a Portuguese case study

In the sphere of anthropological studies on tourism, two approaches can be identified: the first one considers the economic issues, the process of social change, development and modernisation and, receives from the literature a permanent negative critique. The second approach centres on the cultural dimensions of tourism and considers it as both an instrument of destruction and as a potential factor of creation.

Given the complexity of the tourism phenomenon, the author analyses the impact of tourism activities on the rural region of Alentejo, Portugal. In fact, since the 1980s the Alentejo region, with the exception of few locations, has become a popular destination for thousand of local and foreign visitors with an interest in the local/regional culture.

The author presents some past narratives from the first half of the twentieth century that illustrate the construction of Alentejo’s image as a tourism destination.
