We shall address the problem of collecting folk
narratives by examining the issue of key informants and the practice of
textualisation. Our data and positions are based on our long experience in
conducting field research and in finding and recording folk narratives in text.
Our presentation will be confined to the area of Greece.
The nature of the particular kind of material to be recorded calls for more
attention to be paid to selecting informants and examining their codes than
would be necessary for other ethnographic material. The researcher should
record what the people know. The techniques for drawing out informants -
identifying and codifying ways to approach, communicate and co-operate with
them - are of fundamental importance to the recording of the material and the
resulting text.
