The Tale of a Tale: The Crow and the Bitter Gourd

The story of the crow and the bitter gourd is commonly available in Orissa, a coastal state of India. It is, surprisingly, not available in West Bengal or Andhra Pradesh, two of Orissa’s neighbouring states. The tale is probably an example of the oiko type of story about the crow and the sparrow. The crow and the bitter gourd tale has several variations and in this paper I shall try to compare selected versions of this oiko type tale and give a new interpretation of it.
