Some Morphological Traits of Chinese Folktales

The Russian folklorist V. Propp founded an original ‘Morphology’ theory in folktale study, which has had enormous impact on folklorists all over the world in the past few decades. This approach, however, has rarely been applied to the research of Chinese folktales. This paper attempts, by analysing a group of Chinese folktales following Propp's morphological system, to reveal the structural picture of the tales.

The paper focuses on three aspects: the functions, the sequences and the dramatis personae. All morphological traits and varieties investigated and analysed in detail are briefly introduced. The study shows that while the structure of Chinese folktales partly tallies with Propp's tale-structure assumption, some varietal morphological features do exist, and suggests that Propp's theory may be cross-culturally valid, though some modifications should be made.
