The wide-ranging social upheaval that Indonesia has experienced in the past few years has led to a heightened awareness among Indonesians of the separate cultures and ethnic identities that make up the nation. This has been felt strongly in West Sumatra, a province in Indonesia’s west that is occupied mainly by members of the Minangkabau ethnic group for whom the region is an ancestral home dating back to ancient times. This paper will consider the ways in which folklore, especially proverbs and other metaphorical tropes, has become a manifestation of ethnic identity against a background of a broad national culture, particularly in the press, education, and other public forums. It will also discuss the specific roles of language, the national language of Indonesian vs the local language, Minangkabau, in defining ethnic identity and as a source of metaphorical expression in relation to group identity and cultural association.
