Intercontextual Migrations of the Oral Narrative Trickster Hero: phases of transformation in modern African literature.

The African writer has continued to draw from, and to exploit, the rich resources of traditional African hermeneutics and oral literature for the purpose of evolving new ethos’ and different hero concepts. This fact illustrates the thrust of this paper, as it highlights the hybrid nature of modern African literature and the need to articulate a synthesized approach for effective exegetic study of all the generic forms.

This paper will attempt to locate the common grounds and the points of departure of the creative vis-à-vis the critical streams which informed the traditional trickster hero and his appropriation in modern African literature, by characterizing the nature and functions of the trickster hero, and those of his transposed characters; and the development of the trickster hero concept from a comparative historical perspective.
