Ritual Performance and Female Deities in China

This paper will deal with women’s ritual performance and the veneration of a popular goddess in the Songjiang region, a county to the west of modern Shanghai. For centuries stories have circulated about a goddess whose powers relate particularly to the needs of women. For three decades this popular cult and its associated stories and ritual performance were repressed as a remnant of ‘superstition’. During the reform period (post-1978) it has become possible to study the revitalization of this cult and learn more of its ancient history. This paper, based on detailed fieldwork in the Songjiang region, will examine the place of this cult within gendered perspectives of Chinese popular culture and folk performance.
