ANDERSON, Hugh

Simon McDonald: a singer and his songs

McDonald was born at Springhill near Creswick, and except for one short period, spent his entire life in the district as a bush worker. He was a remarkable example of bush musician, singer of vernacular songs, and performer of his own poems about his life. He was saluted by Americans such as Pete Seeger as an outstanding traditional singer, but was neglected by most. His life-story and songs were recorded by the speaker in Creswick in 1965, and later published by National Press.
