Mission Statement "To promote and develop a friendship and philanthropic support group for unattached Jewish people by offering social, cultural, educational, intellectual and spiritual activities of Jewish interest to assist members to develop a personal Jewish friendship network in an emotionally unthreatening and socially warm environment."

The beginnings of the Club
The Club had its beginnings in Easter 1994 when a group of Jewish singles met at the home of Jack Aghion for a barbeque. The Jewish singles mutually expressed their appreciation of the convivial and non threatening nature of the meeting. Their sense of comfort was reflected not only by the number of times that they chose to meet at various venues, but also by the fact that the number of participants grew from approximately 30/40 singles to 70 singles in a short span of time. A committee was formed and the group became loosely known as the "Sunday Group". The suggestion that they call themselves "Singles On Sunday" was quickly rejected when someone noted the problem with the acronym!

A meeting with Dennis Goldenberg and Maya Vogel resulted in the successful Masquerade New Year's Eve function. The outstanding success of this function led to lengthy discussions between Dennis and Jack about the formation of a new Jewish singles group. The group would be formed along the lines of the Sunday Group and a group that Dennis had run some years earlier.

The first function of the new group was a most successful function held at the home of Dennis Goldenberg on 25-Jan-1995. This was followed by a cruise on the Yarra River , a day at Queenscliff, a weekend away at Wilson's Promontory, a guest speaker series with Dr. Jim Cairns and Rabbis Ron Lubofsky and Laibl Wolf, Latin American dancing classes, and an evening at the opera "Tosca" which was preceded by an informative and entertaining lecture by Kathy Dodd, assistant to the director, John Copely.

The resounding success of an evening at Rio Restaurant, which was featured in the "Jewish News", finally convinced the organisers of the need to formalise arrangements by instituting a committee, requiring financial contributions for membership and opening a bank account.

The first meeting took place on the 6-Jul-1995 with fourteen members and a mailing list of 320 interested people. This was followed by a series of successful functions, amongst which were theatre evenings, a cabaret, and evenings at Jazz venues, together with interest groups, such as the Bushwalking Group and Bridge Group, all of which were ably organised by a dedicated team of members.

The successes of the group were formalised at the Annual General Meeting on 29-Oct-1995 when the Club was duly constituted as the incorporated Focus 35+ Inc. Email us: Focus
