Little more than an hour's drive from Melbourne takes you to the state's richest wildflower habitat.

The Brisbane Ranges National Park is about 80km west of Melbourne and about 30km north of Geelong. Popular areas of the park are accessible from the Geelong-Ballan Road and the Staughton Vale Road out of Anakie.

Set in a low range of mountains dissected by rocky gullies, the unusual geology of Brisbane Ranges National Park has preserved plants that have long since vanished from the region, together with a correspondingly diverse bird population and the greatest density of koalas in Victoria.

A major bushfire began on 21 January 2006 and burnt over 40 percent of the Park. Some of the Koalas and other native wildlife escaped, others were rescued and many died. The native vegetation is still regenerating and it is very interesting to see the diversity of wildflowers returning each spring.

The Friends of the Brisbane Ranges provides opportunities for people to meet socially as well as helping and learning about the environment, ecology, flora, fauna, and history of the Brisbane Ranges National Park and Steiglitz Historic Park.

• The Wildflower Show - Sunday 11 October!!
  
  Planning is well underway and any assistance would be most welcome so how about getting involved!

  Also tell all your friends and promote it far and wide as this is a great opportunity to see the diversity of our Brisbane Ranges wildflowers.
  
  The program for the day including maps and information on the day, the workshops and bus tours etc is all available on the Wildflower Show 2 page pdf flyer so please send it to anyone who may be interested.

• An update on the Brush-tailed Phascogale Survey project - An intensive search will take place in the Brisbane Ranges between Thurs 27 and Mon 31 March.
  It will be conducted by Andy Arnold of Ballarat DSE as part of an extensive study into the species. Other trapping will be undertaken in the Wombat Forest, Hepburn and elsewhere in Victoria.
  There is a call for people willing to assist, with final details to be arranged as to times and localities of meeting places. If YOU are interested please contact for details as they become available.
  There is an information sheet survey form If you see one please take the time to fill out and return the form to help guide future monitoring studies.

• If you see eartagged Koalas in the area of the Brisbane Ranges (see page 2 of June newsletter) please call Marilyn 5360 8262 - they are all bushfire survivors who have been monitored by GPS for some time following release.
