Flemington Reading and Writing Program

Flemington Reading and Writing Program is located at the Neighbourhood House (as well as Flemington Library for some courses) and runs a range of ACFE-funded courses for the local community, covering different subject areas. These include English as a Second Language, Adult Literacy, Media Literacy and Computer Studies. There are day and night classes, and as much as possible the Program tries to cater to the needs and interests of the community.

Flemington Reading and Writing Program

Classes are friendly and informal, and are conducted by highly qualified and experienced staff. Students are able to learn at their own pace, and progression into the next level is negotiated with the teacher. People in the classes come from many different backgrounds and cultures, and learning at Flemington is both an educational and social experience.

adult education

Adult education at Flemington Neighbourhood HouseFlemington Neighbourhood House is strongly committed to providing adult education, and presents a number of courses designed to help people seeking access to education. In particular, these are aimed at people who have not completed all their schooling and wish to return to study or complete VCE level, and at people from non-English speaking backgrounds seeking to learn English. With the learning taking place in our friendly environment, these courses can help you become more confident in reading, writing and numeracy, and help you achieve more out of life and work. Flemington Neighbourhood House is also host to the Flemington Reading and Writing Program (see the panel at the left).

Other learning opportunities at Flemington Neighbourhood House include U3A (University of the Third Age), courses and activities for older people.

A number of the courses we offer are accredited State government funded ACFE (Adult Community Further Education) courses, and available to you at very low cost.

Scroll down this page for more information about adult education in general, and on some of the adult literacy and ESL courses offered at FNH. See also the section [Courses & Activities] for more courses and activities at FNH.

Adult, Community and Further Education (ACFE) provides lifelong learning opportunities for Victorian adults, contributing to their social, economic, and cultural development as individuals and members of the Victorian community. The term ACFE is generally used to refer to courses funded by the state government through the Adult, Community and Further Education Board. These courses are offered within the adult and community education (ACE) sector. An ACE provider like the Flemington Neighbourhood House offers a wide variety of courses, including non-accredited (or informal) programs and accredited (formal) programs. An accredited program gives you a certificate or recognised qualification when you complete it.

ACFE program areas include:
  • Adult Literacy and Basic Education (ALBE) -- literacy, numeracy, and basic education courses (up to Year 10 equivalent) for learners ranging from those who are just beginning their return to education to those seeking entry to other forms of education and training
  • the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) for learners through full-time or part-time study
  • general preparatory programs and bridging programs including return to study and work preparation programs
  • English as a Second Language (ESL) courses aimed at improving the English language skills of Language Background Other than English (LBOE) learners
  • vocational education programs are offered through ACE organisations
  • general adult education programs such as arts, crafts, health, history, languages, literature, personal development, philosophy, politics, and science.
Course fees are generally low compared with some TAFE courses and they vary depending on the course. Fee concessions may be available for some eligible learners. Further information on course fees and fee concessions is available from Adult Community Education providers.

U3A -- University of the Third Age

It's never too late to learn -- and learning can be fun and a great way to be in contact with other people. The U3A is a learning co-operative of older people which encourages healthy ageing by enabling members to share many educational, creative and leisure activities. U3A members organise their own activities by drawing on the skills of one another. Like-minded members from all walks of life are encouraged to form study groups and share their knowledge with fellow members. U3As all over Victoria share the same philosophy but each is autonomous and develops its own character. Each U3A's programme of educational and recreational activities develops from the interest of its members and the resources of its community. A mutual interest in learning leads to new friendships based on an expanded social experience.

For more information about U3A, click here for the U3A website.

At Flemington Neighbourhood House, U3A runs a Philosophy class. Phone 9370 3612 for more information.
