FIELD RESEARCH I am seeking adventurous volunteers with a keen interest in wildlife ecology and the outdoors, to assist in field research on remote islands. I am researching the feeding and breeding ecology of the short-tailed shearwater (mutton-bird) on a range of South Australias offshore islands. -Fieldwork involves staying up all night, as the birds are away at sea during the daytime, as well as some work in daylight hours. -Tasks include the capture and handling of adult birds and young chicks to study a range of ecological aspects, notably the deployment of satellite tracking devices, collection of dietary samples and blood samples. -The work is physically demanding, and the living conditions very basic. Accommodation ranges from basic camping with no facilities, to staying in cottages depending upon the island visited. -When on the island there is little contact with the mainland, and field parties will be from 2-4 people. -Field sites are very picturesque, and are frequently visited by seals, dolphins and other seabirds, and the work program permits some free time for swimming, fishing and exploring the coastline. -Transport from Adelaide to the field site, as well as all food during the trip is provided. -Volunteers must commit to the entire duration of a field trip, as boat access to the islands is limited to a single drop off and pick up at the start and ends of the entire trip. -Trip 1- Althorpe Island- Jan 20th - Feb 10th (20
days) If interested in finding out more please contact: luke.einoder@adelaide.edu.au |
