Public Transport
This page contains information on the public transport services in the Flemington/Kensington area. The area is well served by trains, trams and buses.

There are two nearby tram routes. Route 57 (West Maribyrnong to City) goes along Racecourse Road and through North Melbourne. Route 59 (Airport West to City) goes along Mt Alexander Road and Flemington Road.

There are two main train routes in the area. The Broadmeadows Line has Newmarket and Kensington Station. The Upfield Line has Flemington Bridge station. There is a third train route that goes to Flemington Racecourse and the Royal Melbourne Showgrounds, but this operates only at certain times of the year, such as during the Royal Melbourne Show. (Trains to the Show run through Kensington and Newmarket Stations but depart only from North Melbourne.)

The major bus route is Route 402, Footscray to East Melbourne, and this travels through North Melbourne and Carlton amongst other places.

Fares and MetCard Tickets
The latest name for Melbourne's public transport system (the name seems to change every few years!) is MetLlink. The current ticketing system is called MetCard. The ticketing system gives you the flexibility to travel on trains, trams and buses using the same ticket. Just buy a ticket, validate it (put it through a validating machine) and travel. The following information is basic and was correct as of the second half of 2004.MetCard logo

For public transport tickets, Melbourne is divided into three Zones based on distance from the CBD (central business district) of Melbourne. Flemington and Kensington are in Zone 1.
