About Flemington and Kensington
Flemington and Kensington are inner suburbs (close to the central city) of Melbourne. They are two of a number of suburbs located to the north-west of the city, others including North Melbourne, Ascot Vale, and to their north, Moonee Ponds and Essendon. This area is one of Melbourne's oldest and it has been traditionally working-class to middle class.

Flemington covers 1.2 square kilometres in the south of the city of Moonee Valley. In 2001 (according to census data), the suburb had 7,079 residents, of which 3,390 were males and 3,689 females. It accounted for seven per cent of Moonee Valley's total population. Kensington had a similar sized population, 7,439, of which 3,558 were males and 3,881 females. In local government terms, Kensington is split between the City of Melbourne and the City of Moonee Valley. Both Flemington and Kensington had higher than average number of young people (under 24 years of age) compared with Moonee Valley as a whole, and relatively fewer older residents.

Flemington has 1,362 businesses (11.8% of the Moonee Valley total). The main industries in this postcode include property and business services (29%), transport and storage (11%), and retail trade (10%). In retail, Flemington and Kensington are home to two major shopping areas. Racecourse Road offers a multi-cultural shopping experience with a variety of specialist shops, eateries and cafes and two popular pubs. Newmarket Shopping Plaza is just up the road a minute. And Kensington has Macaulay Road's shopping strip with lots of cafes, interior design shops, a florist and other retail outlets as well as professional services. Along with Airport West, most Moonee Valley's main industrial and manufacturing businesses are in Flemington, Kensington and North Melbourne

The following is sourced from the Moonee Valley Council website which takes its information from census data up to the year 2001.

WHERE DO YOU COME FROM?
Although one of Melbourne's older areas, Flemington has, overall, a population relatively new to Australia -- only 49% of residents were born in Australia (compared with 66% across Moonee Valley). The main overseas countries of birth were Vietnam, China, the United Kingdom, Italy, Horn of Africa countries (Somalia, Eritrea) and New Zealand. Flemington's overseas-born residents had a below average level of proficiency in English - 32.5% of this group spoke English not well or not at all, compared to 20% across Moonee Valley. Perhaps a further reflection of this in census data is that Flemington residents had a very high level of non-response to the questions about country of birth and language spoken.
