Singing in a choir gives much fulfilment to the spirit. The choristers in the Melbourne Chamber Choir, the Melbourne Women’s Choir, and the occasional choirs Chorelation and the Melbourne Mastersingers have opportunity to be enriched in spirit through participation in their choir. They have many rehearsals in which to deepen their understanding of the music – improving accuracy and interpretation, and knowing more of the composer and the era of the music. This comes together when they present their best performance to you, their audience. The reward for their artistry is that we have enriched your life too. Be our guest!
Sing me to Heaven is the next concert of The Melbourne Women’s Choir, on Saturday 11 October at 8 pm at James Tatoulis Hall, MLC, 207 Barkers Rd, Kew. It is a programme of music to enrich the spirit. Perhaps the centre-piece will be the Pergolesi Stabat mater, an amazing achievement for a composer who died at 26 years. It is his dramatic response to a poem depicting the mother of Christ in grief at the foot of the cross. Two newly re-structured Vivaldi motets will add to the repertoire of music from the orphanages of Venice that the members of The Melbourne Women’s Choir have been presenting to concert-goers. The loved Bach-Gounod Ave Maria, Franck Panis angelicus, Mozart Alleluia and gorgeous Brahms Ave Maria will continue the ‘ah’ factor; and Australian compositions will introduce to the listener a variety of this country’s sacred music miniatures. From East to West, a concert from China, Mongolia, Indonesia, Korea, Japan and Taiwan, sung by The Melbourne Chamber Choir, will be the choral listening surprise and delight of 2008. Julian Yu wrote Ode to a Plum Blossom, to poems of Mao Tse Tung, for the Melbourne Chamber Choir and chamber orchestra, in addition to arranging two Chinese folk songs, a cappella, for the choir. From Mongolia the choir will sing 4 gorgeous and appealing works. The rhythm of 8 stallions on the Mongolian steppe, a slowly moving mirage on the Gobi desert, homage to an inland sea and to the pastoral land are fascinating, beautiful and unique listening. The three Indonesian songs give recognition to the gamelan gong ensemble. Choristers sing texts and rhythms each providing a contributing line to the musical outcome – one of the pieces maybe as fast as the instrumental ensemble gets! The Korean Arirang, Japanese Sakura and Taiwanese Diu Diu Dong A are beloved national songs, adding to this musical treat. Saturday 8 November at 8 pm, James Tatoulis Auditorium, MLC, 207 Barkers Rd, Kew. More…
Christmas music will be the lovely Respighi work Laud to the Nativity sung by the Melbourne Chamber Choir and, for the Melbourne Women’s Choir, A Child Comes Forth by David Hamilton, along with loved and familiar carols.
