FRIENDS OF BUSHY PARK WETLANDS ANNUAL REPORT
TO JUNE 2003
- Members:
Our small but enthusiastic committee has had a busy and satisfying
year with various activities concerning Bushy Park Wetlands.
Apart from attending bi-monthly committee meetings, our
members have put in a lot of work at about 10 working bees.
Peter Campbell, Kim Cunningham, Margaret Junor and myself
have continued as committee members and we are pleased to announce
the recent addition of Karina-Anne Pierotti who has replaced
Rosemary Cowen following her move to Foster. Rosemary
joined our group in February 2001 and since then has made a
great contribution in time and effort. She will be especially
remembered for conducting many “Water Watches” for us and we
will miss her cheerful nature. I would also like to thank
our remaining committee members for their help during the last
12 months and the other friends of DVP who have also joined
us at our working bees.
- Working Bees: During
the year we had working bees to; clean old duck nesting boxes,
make and paint new duck nesting boxes, erect bat nesting boxes,
construct and erect a floating pontoon, propagate plants, oil
the bird hide, plus weeding and planting at our 2 native gardens.
- Activities: Our
other activities included; a “Wetland Wonder Tour” & “Frog
Watch” in October 2002, a “Possum Prowl” in November 2002, and
a “Water Watch” in March 2003.
- Community Grants
2002: Our $1062 grant application for the purchase
of 24 Bat Nesting Boxes was approved. Erection of the
boxes on trees along Dandenong Creek began in September 2002
and was finished on 17th May 2003. Also our grant of $400
for construction of a Floating Pontoon for Birds was approved
and construction began at Shepherd Road Depot in February 2003.
The Pontoon was launched at the Southern Lake on 15th
March 2003 and has proved very popular with the Pacific Black
Ducks and other water birds.
- Community Grants
2003: Unfortunately we were too
late in applying for a grant this year.
- Feature Articles:
Every 2 months I have written an article for the
Friends of DVP Newsletter, the Information Shelter and our Web
Site. Topics covered include: Bat Nesting Boxes, Floating
Pontoon for Birds and articles on various Bird Species, which
inhabit Bushy Park Wetlands. Rosemary Cowen also wrote
an informative article on “Water Watch”.
Most of these articles are still on our Web Site at - http://home.vicnet.net.au/~fbpw/
