Food of Lizards
FOOD
Lizards feed mostly on insects, small animals, snails and worms,
although some lizards eat plants. Even though lizards have
teeth, there is little chewing of food. Many lizards simply seize
their prey, bite it until it stops struggling and then swallow it. Lizards
recognize prey either by visual clues or by scent and taste. By
protruding its tongue, a lizard is able to pick up airborne particles,
which dissolve in the fluid on the tongue. These particles are then
transferred by the tongue to the Jacobson's organs located in the
front area of the roof of the mouth. The Jacobson’s organs have
a connection to the scent lobes of the brain.
