An amazing 90 bird species have been recorded in the area, ranging from water birds to bushland and farmland birds. On the northern and southern lakes, you are likely to see Pelicans and Ducks. Spoonbills and Herons may be observed searching for food at the water's edge. On the grasslands, insects, perhaps stirred up by the cattle, attract Willy Wagtails, Magpies and Cattle Egrets. White Cockatoos, Galahs and White Ibis are often seen perched on tree branches. Overhead you may spot the Black-shouldered Kite featured on the brand image for Bushy Park and other birds of prey like Brown Falcons and Australian Kestrels. |

In 2000, the Friends of Bushy Park Wetlands applied to Parks Victoria for a grant to build a Bird Hide. Erection of the screw pile foundations was completed in March 2001. While Holmesglen TAFE worked on the construction of the Bird Hide, the Friends cut an access track and paved it with gravel in June. Holmesglen TAFE carpentry students erected the Bird Hide in August and in September the Friends painted the structure with a wood preserving oil. Then Holmesglen TAFE plumbing students erected the roof in October. Also in October, members of Green Corps, students from Camelot Primary School and other volunteers planted 4000 grasses. In November 2001 the Friends and other volunteers planted 200 native wildflowers. |
