The Farry and Brown Families of Yorkshire

The family ancestors came from Ireland and maybe Germany. We begin with a listing of the descendents of Grandmother Bridget Gaffney and Grandfather Patrick Farry. We'll call this couple the first generation.

The 1881 English census records that Patrick Farry was born in Ireland in about 1835. He was thought to be a stonemason. Bridget Farry (nee Gaffney) was also born in Ireland in about 1837

It appears that the family moved from Ireland to Lancashire by 1862, then to Richmond, Yorkshire by 1864

The history of Richmond began in 1068. William the Conqueror granted land to Alan Rufus, a commander in the Norman army. He built Richmond castle, now a ruin, from which he ruled over his estates. The town grew as a fortress town around the castle. (pictured below)

The name Richmond derives from the French "riche-mont" meaning a "strong hill". We haven't yet established why the family moved to a town deep in the Yorkshire dales

Bridget and Patrick Farry had the following children
