Australia has a great variety of wildlife (with a profusion of birds, lizards and insects). Unfortunately our country has a terrible record of species extinctions mainly since the European colonisation of Australia in the late eighteenth century. However the aborigines (the indigenous australian's who arrived at least 40,000 years ago and live mostly in harmony with the environment) did cause the extinction of at least one mammal (the diprotodon) and their dingo (pet dog) out competed the tasmanian tiger (but white Australian's had arrived long before it became extinct this century), notwithstanding these examples the present array of faunal types are but a fraction of the fauna types existing in this country when europeans arrived. These extinctions have been due to environment destruction, introduced flora and fauna (especially the rabbit and blackberries and perhaps cattle, sheep, wheat, cotton and other agricultural varieties could be included). However despite this Australia still has a great array of wildlife and has terrific landscape from deserts to rainforests and from alpine lands to coral reefs, you should come and see it before our "civilisation" destroys it.
